Make the extra effort in order to distinguish yourself from others’

Job: Communications Specialist at Unilever

I started a Bachelor in Communication studies at Tilburg University after which I continued with a Master in Media Studies at the Erasmus University. It was not a deliberate choice for a career in media or journalism, but I wanted to keep the option open.

Within two months after graduation I started at Unilever, where I currently work as a communications specialist. I am responsible for spreading and implementing Unilever’s strategy and vision within Europe and the Benelux. We do this through several means, for example mailings, campaigns, events and intranet. I am also partly responsible for the internal communications in the building in Rotterdam, where I work.

I would advise current students to really dive into the study materials given to you. Look for extra information on the subject matter, make the extra effort. It does not necessarily need to be scientific, but it will help you understand the bigger picture. This is important, for your personal development as well as for your future job. The compulsory components of your study should only be considered as a starting point, there is so much more to learn and discover. Also keep this in mind once you start applying for jobs; make sure you know what is important for the company you want to work for and especially how you can contribute to this goal. This will help you distinguish yourself from others.
