Master Media & Business Alumna

Why did you choose the master Media & Business? Was it a conscious choice for a specific career path? What other factors contributed to your decision?

I chose the master Media & Business, because I wanted to go into a more commercial direction. The bachelor programme I did was more focused on arts and sociology and I noticed that I missed insights in commercial media and entrepreneurship. The master Media & Business programme included new media innovations, media management and advertising courses that I believed would prepare me for a more commercial job.

Has the Media & Business programme lived up to your expectations?

Definitely yes! The programme asks a lot from students, but it’s very inspiring. As I expected it combines business, innovation and creativity which is a very interesting combination. It was very hard work, but a year in which I learned a lot.

How long did it take you to find a job after graduation and through which means did you find it?

I found the job opportunity for my current job via a connection on LinkedIn. I had my first interview at the beginning of July and started working the 31st of August. So that was very soon after finishing my thesis.

For which organization or company do you currently work, and what is your position?

I work as a Content Marketing Specialist for Adfactor, an online media agency located in The Hague. We are specialised in content marketing and native advertising and have a large network of online influencers. Bloggers, vloggers, Instagrammers: I work with them every day. My daily job is to advise brands about their online media strategy and partnerships with online influencers. Every day and every online media campaign is different: my morning can exist of making a plan for a B2B telecom provider and the afternoon in managing an online campaign for a large Food brand.

Were you well-prepared when you started your first job? Why (not)?

In some ways yes, in other ways no. I did not know anything about the media structure, how many different kind of media agencies exist and what the connection between the agencies is. On the other hand, I did learn a lot about online communication and best/worst practices in online media. Those basic principles still come in handy at times.

Which components of your master are useful in your current position or career trajectory?

Creativity and innovative thinking are important elements in my job. The master Media & Business helps you create a problem-solving mind set in which innovation is an important element. I believe this is a very important skill to acquire for any kind of career. Furthermore, I learned a lot about media entrepreneurship in the maser programme which also sparks creativity. In (online) advertising creativity is important because the market changes very fast and the advice you give your clients has to be innovative and fit the current market.
