Study programme

The tourism sector has grown into one of the most important industries in today's world economy. Cities, regions and nations are involved in a non-stop competition for the favours of global tourism flows. The field has become more and more diverse, as a result of ongoing processes of globalization and digitization. As an increasing amount of people is able and eager to travel across the globe, different cultures around the world become interconnected. This calls for new professionals in culture and tourism, who possess the knowledge and skills to anticipate and understand the global dynamics between societies, cultures, media and tourism.

Exploring all dimensions of tourism

In this master, you focus on questions such as:

  • How can we disclose cultural heritage sites to international tourism in an environmentally and community friendly way?

  • Which opportunities and challenges does the tourist industry pose for indigenous communities?
  • How do the history of tourism and our colonial heritage resonate in contemporary tourist practices?
  • How have globalization and the emergence of digital technologies affected tourism and other types of mobility?

In this programme, you will build upon a wide range of disciplines and innovative perspectives on tourism. You will develop your expertise by adopting different ways of looking at problems, finding creative solutions, providing advice and even implementing policy or organizational changes in the tourism industry. While looking at today's challenges, you will always keep in mind, and keep track of, the wider historical or contemporary socio-cultural context.

        • Requests to the Examination Board
          • Students can request special arrangements with the ESHCC Examination Board. You may do so by submitting your request in OSIRIS Student. Go to http://sis.eur.nl/osiris_student/and open Cases/My cases, select the correct request type and complete the form. The Examination Board’s processes these requests based on the information provided in OSIRIS Student and works with a response time of four to six weeks.

        • Request elective
          • Many study programmes contain an elective space in which students may choose the courses they wish to take. All study programmes list approved standard options on their website. Please review this list carefully. If you wish to take an elective that is not listed (within or outside the Erasmus University), you need to ask for permission from the Examination Board. You may submit a request here. Please consider the following:
          • The elective course should be of the appropriate study level (e.g. BA-2/3 or MA)
          • Check for possible overlap in course schedules.
