Bregje van Eekelen joins the Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton
Dr Bregje van Eekelen has arrived at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (USA). As a member of the IAS, Dr Van Eekelen has been invited to join the School for Social Science. The theme for 2017-2018 is "The Social Sciences in a Changing World". Dr Van Eekelen will work on her research project "Brainstorms: A Cultural History of Undisciplined Thought", in which she traces the twentieth century history of creative thinking in military and industrial settings, and complete several articles on histories of social science.
School for Social Sciences
The renowned Institute for Advanced Study was founded in the 1930s to support "curiosity-driven" basic research. By bringing together an international group of historians, sociologists and philosophers, the IAS School for Social Science seeks to contribute to a "social sciences of the social sciences". It focuses on the "politics and practices of the social sciences, their epistemologies and methods, their institutionalization and professionalization, their national development and colonial expansion, their heterogeneous globalization and local contestations, their public presence and role in society."
The conveners at the School for Social Sciences are Prof. Didier Fassin (James D. Wolfensohn Professor of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study) and Prof. George Steinmetz (Charles Tilly Collegiate Professor of Sociology at the University of Michigan.
About Bregje van Eekelen
Dr van Eekelen (Ph.D. University of California, Santa Cruz) is a senior researcher History of Social and Human Sciences at ESHCC, where she is a member of the Global History Research Cluster. She is the recipient of many awards, amongst them a NWO VENI grant (PI), an EUR fellowship (PI) and the Research Excellence Initiative “Depolitization and the Public Interest” (principal co-applicant).
She is a founding member of the Erasmus Institute for Public Knowledge and co-chair of Young Erasmus Academy. Before moving to Princeton, Dr van Eekelen convened the annual conference on the History of Recent Social Science (HISRESS) at Erasmus University Rotterdam.
