Van Sterkenburg speaks with Radio 1 about media attention for Dutch women's soccer team
Sold out stadiums, 2.1 million viewers and the royal couple in the audience: the attention for the Dutch female soccer team is increasing. Radio 1 spoke with media scholar Dr Jacco van Sterkenburg about the media coverage on the 'Orange Lionesses'.
According to Van Sterkenburg, we can interpret this increasing amount of media attention for womens' soccer in different ways. On the one hand, some of the players are motivated by the media attention to live up to expectations and show the audience that women's soccer is just as much of a sport as men's soccer.
On the other hand, the current upswing of women's soccer does not mean that the Lionesses are taken just as seriously as the male soccer team. According to Van Sterkenburg, the media are still often comparing the female and male players. The female, Dutch soccer team still has to prove that their European Championship is a sports event in its own right.
