About ERMeCC

ERMeCC is a research centre located within the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication at Erasmus University Rotterdam. The Centre was founded in 2008 by members of the Departments of Media and Communication and Arts and Culture Studies. Researchers at the Centre are dedicated to carrying out interdisciplinary research on media, communication and culture. The Centre’s mission is to operate as an international, national and local centre of expertise for high-quality research into the myriad relationships between media, society, culture and business. Our research is empirical, interdisciplinary and comparative, informed by work in various social sciences and humanities, in particular media and communication studies,  the sociology of culture and cultural economics. It involves the study of the social meanings and impacts of communication, media and culture; of the role of media, communication and culture in international business and international relations; of media and cultural policies; of trends and strategies in the media and creative industries; of the production, distribution, and reception of media and culture; and of the cultural, economic, technological, social, and political conditions associated with these processes.

Our work

ERMeCC provides an intellectual network for researchers, postgraduate students and professionals in the field of media, communication and culture. We seek to generate research in association with societal organizations, media enterprises and public institutions. In addition, we pursue external research funding to support our growth.

We organise lectures, seminars and events that are of interest to researchers, professionals and students. Furthermore, we develop and participate in international and national research networks concerned with media, communication and culture.

Connections with Education

We have strong linkages with Doctoral, Master's and Bachelor's level teaching. In particular with the Research Master’s programme in the Sociology of Culture, Media and the Arts, the Master's programmes in Arts, Culture & Society, Cultural Economics, Culture, Tourism and Place, Media & Business, Media & Creative Industries, Media, Culture & Society and Media & Journalism, the International Bachelor's programme in Communication and Media (IBCoM) and the International Bachelor's in Arts and Culture Studies (IBACS).
