I would have liked to know that the Master International Public Management and Public Policy did not have an overlap or connection with IBCoM

Master Communication and Information Sciences, Tilburg University, The Netherlands

Class of 2010 (Graduated in 2013)

Currently I am studying the Master Communication and Information Sciences with the specialization in Business Communication and Digital Media at the Tilburg University. I started this master in January. In September, I started with the Master International Public Management and Public Management at the Erasmus University. However, I did not like this Master that much. Therefore I decided to quit this master and start the other Master in Tilburg.

What was important in making up your mind?
I expected that the Master International Public Management and Public Policy would have more overlap with my Bachelor. Unfortunately this was not the case. I am the kind of person that likes to add something in discussion; I like to actively participate. Unfortunately I was unable to do this since I have a background in Communication and Media. The fact that I couldn't actively participate led to the decision to quit this master and start another Master in Tilburg.

What made you decide to choose for this master?
Initially I was planning on doing two master's at the same time; the one in Tilburg and the one in Rotterdam. Unfortunately I was unable to do so due to the compulsory attendance. Therefore I decided to go for the Master International Public Management and Public Policy. I thought that this Master would give me the challenge and the satisfaction I was looking for in a Master. Also, I thought that this Master would give me new insights which I could apply to the field of Communication and Media. This was not the case, it was a completely new field. The Master in Tilburg does give me new insights and new challenges and it does really dig deeper in the field of Communication and Media.

How would you describe the connection between IBCoM and your master?
The connection between IBCoM and International Public Management and Public Policy is almost zero. However, this is an interesting Master if you are interested in the field of international politics. The master at Tilburg University, Business Communication and Digital Media, does have a connection with IBCoM. For the people who chose Business and Communication as their focus area; this might be a nice Master's course for you. There are a lot of interesting courses which focus on the same things as IBCoM, only they go way more in depth (which makes sense since it is a Master).

How would you describe your master?
I would describe my current master as Fun, Interesting and Free. There are a lot of courses from which you can choose. In this way you are free to make your own timetable. This Master has fun assignments from which you actually learn several skills which can be used in the field of communication and media.

In hindsight, what would you have liked to have known before, what you know now?
I would have liked to know that the Master International Public Management and Public Policy did not have an overlap or connection with IBCoM. I am lucky that my alternative option started in January, so that I don't have a gap in my CV.

What kind of job would you be interested in after this master?
There are several fields which draw my attention. After my Master I am planning on doing a traineeship in the field of Marketing or Communication.

Any other points you would like to add?
I would like to add that quitting the Master International Public Management and Public Policy was a really good step for me; It made me realize that this field was not what I was looking for in a Master, especially since it had almost no overlap with IBCoM. Switching to another Master was the best thing for me. Now I am able to actively participate in discussions which have IBCoM-related topics, which are interesting and which are instructive.
