Master Media & Business Alumnus

Why did you choose the master Media & Business? Was it a conscious choice for a specific career path? What other factors contributed to your decision
The reason why I selected this MA comes with the saying “everything happens for a reason!”. Sometimes when you are in search of a master abroad you map various factors, which constitute the final selection, but sometimes these factors may be on the wrong direction. I was on a totally wrong direction when MA in Media & Business appeared right in front of me and changed my way of thinking. This master was all I ever wanted to do in my life and a creative hub I wanted to be part of. My decision eventually proved me right because this master not only reached my expectations but also gave me freedom and creativity to think big and out of the box. Of course studying in Rotterdam, and especially at Erasmus University, was also a factor which affected my selection, both for personal and professional reasons.

Has the Media & Business programme lived up to your expectations?
As I said before my master not only gave me a good sense of how new digital transformation disrupt traditional business models but also gave me space and freedom to act as a creative and as an entrepreneur in order to better understand these transformations. Through various team and individual projects I exposed myself to numerous case studies from all over the world which have widened my horizons. Another feature which exceeded my expectations is in this master you feel that learning is a two-way process. Teachers also learn from you and your work, and work of good quality is highly recognizable among academics, who are very open to support students and cooperate for potential publications. After all, it is important to be in a place when your hard work is appreciated. Last but definitely not least, I had the opportunity to meet exceptional teachers, with good teaching methods and passion for what they do. They made this MA even greater!

How long did it take you to find a job after graduation and through which means did you find it?
Even before my departure from Rotterdam I had started applying for jobs in Greece at several companies and, surprisingly, the day I flew back I received a phone call from one of these companies and I quickly arranged my first job interview. It was not that simple as it seemed in the beginning, things were moving slowly, but that mostly was a result of political and economic instability which affected the whole country. For 4 months, I had to participate in several job interviews, many tests and many role-plays and simulations to finally sign up for my first job. Was my MA in Media & Business a facilitator during all that time? Well, it definitely was. After all, being among the first 10 of the 2000 applicants is a success which my master has definitely contributed to.

For which organization or company do you currently work, and what is your position?
I got a job in a Greek telecommunications company, in a graduate scheme, which means that I am rotating every 5 months in different departments, relevant to my academic background, in order to gain a wider perspective on how big organizations work and, of course, relevant professional experience. After completing 5 months in HR department, in the internal communications team, now I am in Marketing Communications department, taking care of our brand, and in several months I will be heading to my final department, Corporate Affairs , in order to practice external communications, CSR & crisis management. I am so excited to be part of this scheme since it is a powerful learning experience which allows me to challenge myself everyday through adapting to different situations and projects.

Which components of your master are useful in your current position or career trajectory?
The MA in Media & Business provides not only relevant knowledge but also the opportunity to “get your hands dirty” with various projects during the courses and to learn to cooperate with people from various cultures and backgrounds. This is a skill that only later, in the job field, you can really appreciate, when the “job needs to be done” and you need to communicate and work in a team with all kinds of different people. Moreover, the intense way the program runs throughout the year demands dedication, a good agenda and passion in order to successfully accomplish all its parts. These are also important soft skills that are well appreciated in all jobs and skills always take you one step further. Lastly, being a Media & Business graduate in the end is a good reason to believe more in yourself and in your capabilities. Consequently, when the time of your first job interview comes having accomplished this master with success will boost your confidence and you will be able to better brand yourself!
