This conference at the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) is organised in partnership with the Council of Europe Best Practice Programme on Promoting Academic Integrity. The Council launched this programme in 2021 to reward institutions and academics whose promotion of academic integrity can serve as an example and inspiration for others. The EUR won their Award with the Dilemma Game App in 2022. This conference will provide a unique opportunity to showcase and celebrate the Dilemma Game App and to provide a forum for discussion and the sharing of knowledge.

The Dilemma Game App was developed by the Erasmus University Rotterdam, was selected as the best practice of the first 2021-2022 cycle. The practice is intended for researchers, including those who find themselves faced with dilemmas, and through critical dialogue helps in further developing and strengthening their own “moral compass”.

    The aim of the conference is to discuss and connect research carried out in academia on ethics, transparency and integrity with the educational realities of higher education institutions. Key notes speeches will include presentations on topics of integrity and trust in science, ethics, and student involvement in fostering a culture of integrity.

      About the Council of Europe

      The Council of Europe has worked for decades to promote and ensure quality education which is free of corruption. The platform to promote ethics, transparency and integrity (ETINED Platform) was established to propose a new approach based on the idea that quality education will only be achieved, and corruption effectively addressed, if all relevant sectors of society commit fully to fundamental positive ethical principles.

      On July 13, 2022, the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers adopted a Recommendation to its 46 member states aimed at assisting them in combating fraud in the field of education.

      The recommendation follows four years of work in the framework of the ETINED platform and addresses the need for a common European approach in this field.

      This new legal standard is structured in four dimensions: prevention, prosecution, international cooperation, and monitoring. The text makes six main recommendations to member States of the Council of Europe:

      • to promote quality education by eliminating education fraud;
      • to protect pupils, students, researchers, and staff at all levels of education from organisations and individuals engaged in selling (and advertising) fraudulent services;
      • to provide support for the implementation of preventative and protective measures, as well as a culture of equality of opportunity at all levels and in all sectors of education and training and in the transition between these sectors;
      • to monitor technological developments that could support new forms of fraud;
      • to facilitate international cooperation in the field;
      • to support wide dissemination of the recommendation.
