On Friday 23 September 2022, E.M. op den Kamp will defend her PhD dissertation, entitled: ‘Proactive Vitality Management. Taking control over well-being, job performance, and creativity’.

Dissertation in short:

This dissertation introduces and explores a new behavioral concept called ‘proactive vitality management’ (PVM). Together, the studies included in this dissertation show that people who proactively manage their vitality for work –by using available physical and mental energy in a planned manner, for example by deliberately listening to relaxing music during work, or shutting off their phone and e-mail to be able to concentrate – feel better and also perform better and more creatively. The studies in this dissertation present a theoretical framework of PVM and the surrounding and consequential processes and contribute to the literature by emphasizing the importance of self-regulatory and proactive behavior of people in their own work process. In addition, in this dissertation I have made various suggestions for future research, which could, for example, focus on the precise role of the (social) work environment in the PVM process, the role of PVM with regard to burnout, and the possible downsides of PVM. Anyone who wants to improve his or her work-related engagement, health or functioning can ensure that they have more physical and mental energy for their work through a proactive mindset and intentional, goal-oriented actions. They can then work healthier, more pleasantly, more creatively and more effectively, which makes PVM an important theme for both organizations and the individual. Therefore, in addition to valuable organizational policies or programs to promote employee vitality, organizations can benefit from creating an environment in which employees are stimulated and encouraged to take control themselves. I therefore hope that my dissertation may serve as a building block to generate awareness and attention for PVM in practice and inspire future research into PVM, in order to create a better understanding of the important role that people themselves can play with regards to optimal functioning.
