Positive Organisational Psychology

Program coordinator: Prof. Dr. Arnold B. Bakker

The Department of Work and Organizational Psychology is organized in the Center of Excellence for Positive Organizational Psychology, and focuses on the three main pillars of I-O psychology – work, organization, and personnel psychology.

Faculty and PhD students focus particularly on positive organizational psychology phenomena like work engagement, job design, job crafting, strengths use, emotional intelligence, and work-family balance. However, these phenomena are always considered with an eye for job stress, burnout, and counterproductive work behaviors. In addition, we have specialized in personnel selection methods and procedures.

We bring the “Lab to Society” by conducting field experiments and workplace interventions, often combined with experience sampling methods where employee well-being is repeatedly measured with smartphones over the course of the working weeks. Our main aims are to (1) develop theory and measurement regarding positive organizational behavior, so that we can (2) develop interventions to facilitate employee work engagement and organizational performance.
