Roland Bal

“Dancing with a Virus: Towards an Adaptive Management”

Roland Bal |Full Professor at Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management | Health Care Governance (HCG)| kicked off our lecture series on the 15th of October (16.00-17.00).

Based on ethnographic observations in hospitals during the ‘first wave’ of the COVID crisis in the Netherlands, Prof. Roland Bal discussed the ways in which organisations had coped with the uncertainties related to the pandemic. He used the metaphor of the ‘dance’ to analyze the relational, reflexive and situated nature of organizational responses, showing how organisations responded to the different rhythms of the COVID crisis. He also introduced his ongoing research into regional decision-making.

"Health & Economics of COVID-19, the Perspective of an Economist Who Works with the Pharmaceutical Industry"

Responses to the pandemic have often been framed in terms of striking a balance between protecting people’s health and protecting the economy. There is an assumption that countries face a trade-off between these two objectives. But is this assumption true?

On the 2nd of December, dr. Koen Berden will be joining our lecture series to give his perspective on the topic.

"I am an economist who has carefully looked at the economic impact of policies. In this case, the most important observation I would like to share is that policy makers should not fall into the trap of thinking that it is either health or economics (based on lockdown discussions). In fact: without health, there is no economics either. So, I would say…first deal with the pandemic, and then - in parallel - focus on the economy. COVID-19 has to be reduced to zero for the economy to really take off again."

Dr. Koen Berden is the managing director of Trade Impact B.V., a boutique research and advisory firm focused on advising on smart trade and investment, and assistant professor at Erasmus University Rotterdam. He is working on different projects, including for the European Federation for Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA) where he is an external Executive Director for International Trade, and project advisor to the European Commission.

In his different roles, he is focused on lecturing and researching the potential impact of trade and investment agreements as well as ex-ante evaluations of trade agreements. He is particularly interested in the sustainable elements (social, environmental and human rights) and on how to stimulate innovation for long-term gains from trade and investment.
