Dr. Vera Schölmerich is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Social & Behavioral Sciences at Erasmus University College (EUC). She obtained a BA in Social Sciences at Utrecht University College (UCU) and an MPhil in Development Studies at Cambridge University. Moreover, Vera completed a joint-PhD at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Erasmus Medical Center and at the Department of Organization Sciences of the VU University Amsterdam. Vera was born in Germany, and has worked/studied in Germany, France, the USA, Great Britain and Thailand.
Vera's research focuses on applying behavioral insights – including nudges – to influence people’s behaviors. For example, she tests whether we can get students to join a study group (which we know increases learning) by making participation the ‘default’ option. Next to studying how we can improve engagement and performance in education, most of Vera's research focuses on improving health behaviors, such as encouraging people to go to their medical check-ups.
Why do you work at EUC?
I work at EUC because I am a big fan of a liberal arts education - I experienced the benefits of this approach first-hand during my BA at University College Utrecht. Also, I love Rotterdam (don't tell my friends from Amsterdam I said that).
