The Centre for Information and Research on Organised Crime (CIROC) is hosting a webinar entitled: 'Violence against Journalists' on Wednesday 27 October 2021. This webinar will focus on what can be learned from criminological research on violence against journalists. It will focus on the personal experiences of journalists with (the threat of) violence at home and abroad.

The influences of increasing violence against journalists

The recent outburst of violence against Dutch journalists, culminating in the liquidation of Peter R. de Vries, has led to questions among the public, in the political debate and among academic researchers. The phenomenon of threats to media professionals is (unfortunately) not new and the questions it raises have been the same for years: what are the motives of the perpetrators? To what extent is there a clear link to organized crime? What are the experiences and reactions of journalists who are victims and sometimes have to go into hiding for years? Has there been an increase in threats and use of violence in recent years? To what extent has violence become an occupational risk for Dutch (crime) journalists?

About the webinar

Wednesday, October 27, 2021 CIROC organizes a webinar on the phenomenon of 'violence against journalists'. We will focus on what we can learn from criminological research on violence against journalists and what the personal experiences with (the threat of) violence are of (crime) journalists at home and abroad.

In the first part of the webinar, Frank Bovenkerk and Elena Krsmanovic will try to provide criminological explanations for this phenomenon in the Netherlands and abroad. The second part of the webinar consists of a roundtable discussion with a number of Dutch (crime) journalists. Marian Husken, Jan Meeus and Wouter Laumans talk about their experiences with the threat of violence as a result of their journalistic publications, the way they deal with threats, but also how they look at the future of their profession.
