The Netherlands a Narco-state?

Subversion by drug crime

Drug criminals infiltrating local parliaments, loads of cocaine in the port of Rotterdam, lawyers and investigative journalists being liquidated. It sounds like the plot of a thrilling movie. Yet this is the harsh reality in the Netherlands. Society is increasingly being confronted with drug crime. Where is this coming from? And perhaps more importantly, what can we do about it?

Drug criminals are increasingly using the services of the surface world to advance their plans. In this way, the criminal underworld and the surface world are becoming more and more intertwined. How does this ‘subversion’, as it is called, work? In this lecture, criminologists Lieselot Bisschop and Karin van Wingerde discuss what subversion entails and which initiatives have been taken to tackle it. Afterwards there will be an opportunity for questions.

  • Prof. Dr. Lieselot Bisschop is professor of Public and Private Interests (ESL). Her research focuses on different aspects of environmental crime, corporate crime and organized crime. Among other things, she has conducted research into cocaine trafficking in the port of Rotterdam, but also into the ecological effects of crime.

  • Prof. Dr. Karin van Wingerde is professor of Corporate Crime and Governance (ESL). Her research mainly focuses on tackling environmental crime, organizational crime and organized crime. She has conducted research on illegal financial flows and money laundering, among other topics.

Currently, together with colleagues from Maastricht University (Prof. Hans Nelen and Dr. Roland Moerland), they are researching projects of public and private organizations aimed at tackling subversion through drug crime in the Netherlands. In this lecture, they will elaborate on this research to illustrate what subversion entails and what can be done about it.
