The first-ever on-campus hackathon of the Erasmus University: be sure to be there!

In groups, 100 students will tackle four challenges to prepare for the education of the future. Will you be one of them?

You will develop your ideas in a small team, stay overnight on campus (if you wish) and work towards a pitch in front of a professional jury consisting of EUR and business professionals. And in the meantime, you’ll be experiencing lots of fun and energy with our gamified mini-challenges.

Don't worry about your programming skills. Even though the name might suggest otherwise, you don’t need to be a computer hacker to participate in this Hackathon. Think of hacking in the sense of ‘life-hacks’; you will be thinking creatively and critically about the education of the future and find solutions to existing problems!

Participating in the event will get you a certificate signed by our rector magnificus Rutger Engels. Winning the event will make sure your idea gets realised as CLI or Students-for-Students (S4S) project.

Four challenges

You will be able to indicate your preference for one of the challenges after registering for the event. Please note that we will do our utmost to match you with one of your preferences, but we can’t fully guarantee your preferred challenge.

The four challenges are:

We want to be prepared for the real world! We want to contribute to a more social, ecological and economical responsible future. How can our education prepare us for this? How do we use our academic knowledge and skills to contribute to solving real time, tangible problems that matter to us, the city and the world? And what kind of skills should those be?

(How) can the responsibility of designing education be shared between staff and students? How can we involve students and use their ideas about how the content (more future-proof) and way of teaching (less talk-based lectures) could be better. How can this help to unburden faculty staff? What are important enablers? What would your ideal course/programme look like?

What does it mean to be part of Erasmus University? Which shared values do we have? Are those diversity, sustainability and innovation? How do we immerse new students in them? How can we learn from our own goals and perspectives while being a part of an academic community? How can our campus be smarter, to help us do that? And after graduation, how do we enable life-long learning? Which 21st-century skills do we need for that?

In today’s world, we expect services to match our personal needs and desires. Why should education be the exception? We are all different, and we learn in different ways and paces too. How can we design personal learning routes for students based on flexibility, preference and natural curiosity? How can we synchronize the academic calendar time wise and content wise, to make cross-overs to other courses, studies and faculties possible? How not to drown in a sea of possibilities?

Optional: spend the night in the Erasmus Sport hall, have breakfast at 8:15 and leave before 8:50 (because of another event starting in sports hall at 9:00).

Day 2 – May 18th

Location

Central meeting point and ‘headquarters’ will be the Education Lab, Polak building ground floor. Your team will each be assigned a space in the rest of the Polak building or Tinbergen building to meet, discuss, work on your ideas.

Registration

Register as soon as possible via our stager ticketshop.

Please keep the following in mind while ordering your ticket:

  • There’s limited tickets available. First come, first served.
  • You have to order a sleepover ticket on top of your regular ticket if you want to spend the night at in the sport hall. You won’t be signed up for the event if you only order a sleepover ticket.
  • Only order a ticket for yourself (one per student), because we are unable to contact your fellow students via their email addresses if you order a ticket for them.
  • Please let us know if you won’t be able to make it to the event after you ordered a ticket, so we can let someone else attend in your place.

 The event team will contact you for your challenge preference after your registration.
