Content

The financial crisis (2008 - ?) has reminded academics and citizens alike that the economy is too important to leave to economists. After many years of a virtually unquestioned belief in the virtues of unfettered markets, basic questions have resurfaced about how the economy actually works. Against this background, this course in the sociology of economic processes will deal with topics like firms, markets, economic networks, money and finance, economic elites and inequality. Each lecture will start with a brief reminder of how standard economics deals with the issue at hand, before considering the alternative views that sociologists and others have developed.

Learning objectives

  • Learn about sociological approaches to central ‘economic’ issues.
  • Learn to compare economic and sociological approaches to the economy in a reflexive manner (gaining insight into how knowledge about the economy is produced).
