In the years ahead, the partners will strengthen their joint contribution to valorisation and innovation in the region of Zuid-Holland and in Europe by combining several activities and initiatives and placing their complementary competencies at each other's disposal. This will increase quality, efficiency and effectiveness. They will also support each other, for example by referring new companies to the partner most suited to them.
Zuid-Holland, and in particular the metropolitan region of Rotterdam/The Hague, is one of Europe's most dynamic regions, combining to form a strong innovation cluster. The province distinguishes itself through its wide industrial base, covering a large number of technological sectors and through the presence of the port of Rotterdam. With three universities, two university medical centers and several universities of applied sciences and knowledge institutes such as the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO), the region can play an important role both in the Dutch Top Sectors and the European Grand Challenges.
Innovation and entrepreneurship
Clusters of innovation and enterprise have developed in recent years around the universities and their UMCs. The BioScience Park Leiden (85 companies) has incubators and an accelerator and is one of Europe's five leading science parks. The young Science Port Holland (region of Delft-Rotterdam) is one of the fastest-growing science parks, Yes!Delft is a highly successful incubator, the Erasmus University Medical Center is expanding its incubator and one is also being established at rapid speed around Rotterdam's Erasmus University.
The three universities and two allied university medical centers LUMC and Erasmus MC each have a strong valorisation organisation, focusing specifically on knowledge transfer and innovation in their specific areas. The focus differs in each of the three universities, making the competencies of their three valorisation organisations extremely complementary. For example, at Erasmus University, business education is highly advanced, Delft has a strong focus on company creation and Leiden specialises in knowledge protection and licensing of patents.
