Jeroen van Haaren and Frank van Oort analyze the Rotterdam Food cluster in a research project commissioned by the City of Rotterdam.

7,500 food companies are active in the Rotterdam region, ranging from production (38%) to retail (26%), trade (15%) and services (15%). Van Haaren and van Oort present a snapshot of entrepreneurship in the food cluster: where are start-ups located? In which areas do they find the highest survival rates? Where does employment grow most strongly? They literally chart entrepreneurs and companies by mapping the ecosystem of food companies. However, they argue more is needed to measure the potential for innovation and sustained growth, and to link this to economic and knowledge networks, area based investment and tailored policy. Therefore, they present a research agenda on entrepreneurship dynamics and innovation to fuel the “food for the future” agenda of the Rotterdam Region.
