The Executive Board has appointed Prof. Victor Bekkers as the new Dean of the Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences (ESSB) as per 1 January 2018.

Bekkers (1963) is Professor of Public Administration and vice-Dean of ESSB. Over the past several years, he has gained extensive administrative experience holding the positions of Research Director of the department of Public Administration, curriculum Dean of the Erasmus Graduate School of Social Sciences and the Humanities, and chair of the Department of Public Administration and Sociology.

Victor Bekkers succeeds Prof. Henk van der Molen who has been Dean since 1 September 2009. Van der Molen’s extended second term as Dean ends on 1 January 2018. The Faculty Council endorses Professor Bekker’s appointment. The months leading up to this date will be used as an induction period.

Rector Magnificus Prof. Huibert Pols: “Victor Bekkers is a dynamic and inspiring personality with the ability to bring people together and advance the open exchange of ideas. A true builder of bridges. The broad support for Professor Bekkers in the faculty is in part due to his affinity with the spectrum of scientific fields within and beyond the faculty. I am convinced that he will further develop ESSB successfully along the lines of his new strategy”.

Challenge
Victor Bekkers: ""I see this appointment as a wonderful challenge to take the next step with ESSB. One of the priorities will be interdisciplinary collaboration within the faculty and with external organisations, both in research and education. In this respect, I feel it is important to convincingly illustrate the added value of education and research in the field of social and behavioural sciences. This is about the vitality and resilience of the modern-day 'fluid’ society, and the new, changing roles cities and citizens will play in it. This is only possible through linking scientific quality to societal relevance. To achieve this, it is essential to have innovation, talent development and the capacity to collaborate, to forge alliances.”
