Back to overview

I am a social anthropologist of an interdisciplinary background. In 2010, I received my PhD in Development Studies/Anthropology from the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) at the University of Sussex, UK. Since 2002, my research has focused on gender, generation, youth, displacement, refuges, return, and identities. For my PhD, I analyzed social transformations in the context of forced displacement and return among southern Sudanese Nuer refugees.  I have also been developing a strand of work around narratives of displacement and refugeeness, and urban displacement.

Since 2002, I have been carrying out long-term research among Nuer South Sudanese refugees in Sudan, Egypt, Kenya and among returnees in South Sudan. I have also worked on collaborative research about adolescent girls’ migration in Bangladesh, Ethiopia and Sudan. Currently, I am researching refugees' involvement in civc change and hosting refugees in host countries, including in Sudan and in Switzerland. The second strand of research focuses on sexual and reproductive health transformations among Syrian youth in Jordan. I am also working with a colleactive of artists and South Sudanese refugees in Lyon in an arts-based project on transformations of marriage practices during the war and in exile among South Sudanese - "120 vaches".

I use visual media, feminist methodologies, and creative-based and participatory methods in fieldwork. My most recent film was made in collaboration with a team of researchers and filmmakers, and is called Time to look at girls: migrants in Ethiopia and Bangladesh. The long version of the film, 2 Girls, has been shown at numerous film festivals across the globe.
