Profile

Orie's PhD research is focused on the nature and causes of access to finance difficulties for firms in Suriname. This study is motivated on the one hand by findings in the literature that better access to finance is associated with enhancement of the growth potential of firms and hence the economy and on the other hand persistent findings by the World Bank that access to finance is perceived by firms as one of the main bottlenecks for doing business in Suriname. Furthermore, anecdotal evidence exists on firms having access to finance difficulties. Therefore, a rigorous investigation into the bottlenecks of access to finance in Suriname is warranted. While we acknowledge the merits of cross country studies and doing business reports, we see one common pitfall in those studies: specific country characteristics are not (properly) taken into account. The novelty of this research will be the incorporation of the Surinamese characteristics in specifying the bottlenecks and investigating the financing obsatcles both from the firms' and banks' perspectives. In doing so, Orie will contribute to the empirical literature on access to finance and provide input for focused policymaking in Suriname.
