Admission requirements

In order to defend a PhD at Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), you must meet a number of admission requirements.

  • Everyone who has obtained a Dutch master’s degree (in accordance with the WHW, the Dutch Higher Education and Research Act), an ir. (engineering graduate), mr. (law graduate) or drs. (other graduates) degree.
  • Candidates with a non-Dutch diploma should contact the Admissions office in good time so that their non-Dutch diploma’s can be accredited. This procedure can take up to six months.
  • Provisional admission is possible on the grounds of other Dutch diplomas or non-Dutch diplomas (see Section 2 of the PhD defence rules).  Candidates with an HBO degree, on or before 31 August 2002 (with at least 168 credits), can be admitted to take their PhD.
  • PhD candidates may be EUR employees, but you can also work on a thesis under the supervision of a professor (supervisor) of the EUR if you are not from the EUR.

PhD candidate’s role

A PhD candidate is usually a member of the academic staff of Erasmus University Rotterdam. He or she is given a position for four years with the objective of obtaining a PhD. The PhD candidate carries out research, follows academic courses and also teaches. In some cases it is possible to take a PhD at the EUR without being in the employment of the EUR.

Erasmus PhD Association Rotterdam (EPAR) is a network that promotes the interests of PhD candidates at the faculties and schools of Erasmus University Rotterdam and Erasmus MC.
