Dual language policy

Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) is a bilingual university, where Dutch and English are both considered working languages. On this page, you will find information about what our dual language policy would mean for you as an EUR employee.

Are you looking for more practical information on working at Erasmus University Rotterdam as an international employee? Make sure to check our International Staff at EUR page as well!

What does our dual language policy entail?

As an employee, you are expected to be able to write, speak and understand the language or languages that are necessary for your position. Do you only need Dutch or English to perform your work? We still find it important for you to learn the basics of the other working language. Because of EUR’s international character, it is likely you will need English at one point. As an international employee, learning Dutch will also help you feel more at home in a Dutch environment.

Do you work in Professional Services, for example in HR, Finance, or IT? Then you will be given an English assessment within the first few months of your employment, and, if necessary, additional language courses to bring you up to C1 level. This way, you actively work to develop yourself and can communicate with all your colleagues.

Language Matrix

The language matrix below provides you with an indication of the language requirements for the various positions at EUR. The Language and Training Centre website has more information about this CEFR-matrix. Here you will also find information about our employee language assessment and language courses.
