Academic Leadership

In your role as an assistant professor, and as an aspiring associate professor, you will need skills to manage, inspire, motivate and coach diverse professionals. Creating a safe and inclusive work climate, managing quality of research and education and financial management are other important aspects of your (new) role.

This course is designed to give insight into your personal leadership style and to help you further develop it. You will also be trained and coached in effective communication skills.

Besides this, you will be offered blocks about Strategy & Governance, Office politics, Planning & Control, and People Management. The course program alternates between theory and practice, individual coaching and peer supervision. Attention is given to personal learning objectives and questions from other participants.

Participation in this course is considered a necessary qualification for management, as prescribed in the EUR criteria for the academic functions to become associate professor and full professor. We strive to have gender balance in the course as it is important for the group dynamics and effectiveness of the course.

I appreciated the intervision meetings in particular – it is nice to discuss dilemmas with the colleagues and learn how they would handle, for instance, a stagnating PhD project or a budget competition.
