Academic Leadership

A course designed to give insight into your personal leadership style and to help you develop it further. Besides this, topics which are addressed during the course are e.g. Strategy & Governance, Office politics and People Management.

The course program alternates between theory and practice, individual coaching and peer supervision. There is also room for personal learning objectives and questions from other participants.

Participation in this course is a necessary qualification for management, to grow from assistant professor to associate professor. We strive to have gender balance in the course as it is important for the group dynamics and effectiveness of the course.

In your role as an assistant professor, and as an aspiring associate professor, you will need skills to manage, inspire, motivate and coach diverse professionals. Creating a safe and inclusive work climate, managing quality of research and education and financial management are other important aspects of your (new) role.

  • To encourage diversity in leadership positions there is a special offer for female participants who want to join the Academic Leadership course with the Women in Academia (WiA) program. WiA focuses on supporting female talent to higher leadership positions by addressing questions around gender climate and leadership, and teaches the participants to skillfully navigate the academic arena. If you wish to combine the two programmes, you will get exempted from the fourth module "Leadership in context of the organization" in AL. Instead of this module, you will participate in the Women in Academia programme without any extra charges.

    Leadership in context of the organization
    In this module we aim to getting teams and groups into a desired change where the leader inspires people and at the same time gives them enough professional space to take their own initiatives.

    • Carry out a vision
    • Team model effective teams (diagnose model to address team effectiveness)
    • Tuckman (phases of team development)
    • Integrative decision-making (decision-making method whereby the wisdom of the group is optimally used, all group members feel heard and genuine commitment is created on decisions).

    This module is mainly about making clear what the role of a leader means so the participants have a correct understanding of what leadership means within EUR.
