In the MJA-3 agreement, Erasmus University committed itself to a target of increasing energy efficiency by 2% annually in the period 2005-2020. Agreements have also been made with the municipality of Rotterdam on reducing CO2 emissions. On the basis of these agreements, in the last few years the university has taken specific steps to make the campus more sustainable. Those measures will start to bear fruit from 2012. One important step taken by the university has been to adopt sustainable solutions during the construction of new buildings and in the restoration of listed buildings. It has also signed an energy performance contract under which it will apply energy-saving measures in existing buildings and build a heat and cold storage plant. Further agreements have been made in relation to mobility and food. The EUR also intends to implement a more sustainable policy on waste in the coming years.
