New dean for Erasmus MC as of 1 September 2017

The Executive Board of Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) has appointed Prof. J.P.T.M. (Hans) van Leeuwen as dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences as of 1 September 2017.

In accordance with the agreements made between Erasmus MC and the EUR, the Supervisory Board of Erasmus MC has appointed Professor Van Leeuwen as member of the Erasmus MC Board of Directors as of the same date.  Positive advice on the proposed appointment was given by the Staff Assembly, the Staff Council and the CRAZ (Clients’ Participation Council University Hospitals).

Hans van Leeuwen studied Biology at VU University Amsterdam, after which he received his PhD from Leiden University. He has been working at Erasmus MC as a staff member and researcher at the department of Internal Medicine since 1988. His work in this period included leading a research program focusing on Calcium and Bone metabolism, and heading the Internal Medicine laboratory. Hans van Leeuwen has been deputy dean of Research, and Research and Education  director since 2015. Moreover, he is also a member of the Board of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.

Hans van Leeuwen sees this step as great opportunity to share the experience he gained while setting up an internationally oriented line of research, teaching and structuring education, and starting a spin-off company, combined with the experience gained in management positions to benefit Erasmus MC. He recognizes that strengthening research and education and bringing it in line with expected changes in clinics, diagnostics and patient care in the near and more distant future is a major challenge. Key to achieving this are focus, innovation, and synergy and special attention will need to be paid to the development of talents who will shape the future.

The Supervisory Board and the Board of Directors are very pleased with Hans van Leeuwen’s appointment and look forward to a successful working relationship.
