Honorary doctorate for Christopher Hood

The influential British academic Professor Christopher Hood receives an honorary doctorate from Erasmus University Rotterdam during the 104th Dies Natalis, which will be held on Wednesday, 8 November 2017. The theme of this year’s anniversary is 'For the benefit of all: making society work'. The Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences (ESSB) takes centre stage this year.

The dies theme ‘For the benefit of all: making society work’ touches upon all aspects of research and education at ESSB and also mirrors the work of Professor Christopher Hood. This influential British academic will receive an honorary doctorate from Erasmus University during the ceremony for his contribution to the development of the field of Public Administration in general and in the Netherlands in particular.

Furthermore, the presentations by the Rector Magnificus, Professor Huibert Pols, the Chair of Erasmus Trustfonds, Mr. Michiel Muller, and the Dies lecture by ESSB Dean Professor Henk van der Molen will address aspects of contributing to society.

About the honorary doctor

Professor Hood is currently emeritus Fellow at All Souls College of the University of Oxford, where he was Gladstone Professor of Government between 2001 and 2014. In 1996, he was elected Fellow of the British Academy.

Amongst others, he provided Public Administration scholars with the concepts they needed to make sense of New Public Management practices, i.e. the worldwide rise of the use of market tools within the public sector at the end of the last century. Even at that early stage, Hood was warning about the risks of the one-sided emphasis on the values of efficiency and effectiveness in these practices.

The Dies Natalis is part of the Rotterdam Talentweek. During this week, a series of events will show that both Rotterdam and Erasmus University are perfect places to foster your talent.
