Young Erasmus the Erasmus Institute for Public Knowledge present:

TTIP and the future of the democratic state

Food for Thought Lab

Friday, 16 October 2015 13.30 – 17.00 hrs

Van der Goot M-building (room Athene), Woudestein Campus, Erasmus University

Young Erasmus, together with the Erasmus Institute for Public Knowledge, invites academics, students and citizens for an afternoon of debate, dialogue and reflection aimed at identifying the major sources of controversy surrounding the Transatlantic Trade & Investment Partnership (TTIP.) During the last G7 Summit, in June 2015, heads of states have renewed their commitments to move forward with the negotiations on TTIP. As the transatlantic negotiators and bureaucrats seem steadfast in their goal of concluding this partnership, the TTIP discontents are on the rise, portraying the deal as an attack on democracy and as a serious threat to the realization of domestic and supranational public policy. The debate on TTIP is gaining new momentum, as on September 16, the European Commission has published the proposal for a new Investment Courts.

What are the changes that the TTIP would bring about in our legal systems and, more generally, in our society? In unpacking the legal-technical world underlying the TTIP negotiations, the participants of this Lab will look at the negotiations and assess how the interest of the public is reflected in the negotiating documents.  The Lab consist of a mix of short presentations and a debate between the experts and the audience.

Confirmed speakers include:
