Dick Houtman (Utrecht, 1963) is Professor of Sociology of Culture and Research Director at Erasmus University’s Department of Sociology, member of the Amsterdam School for Social Science Research (ASSR), member of the program commission of NWO’s The Future of the Religious Past, and member of the editorial boards of Sociologie and Politics and Religion.

Though he has firm roots in survey methodology, he is well versed in qualitative research methods, too. He has contributed three chapters to Jo Segers’ Methoden voor de maatschappijwetenschappen [Methods for the Social Sciences] (Assen: Van Gorcum, 1999; second edition 2002), a methodology handbook that uses his PhD thesis as an exemplar of survey research (Werkloosheid en sociale rechtvaardigheid: Oordelen over de rechten en plichten van werklozen [Unemployment and Social Justice: Judgments on the Rights and Obligations of the Unemployed]) (Amsterdam: Boom, 1994).

Trained as a sociologist of work, his interest has increasingly shifted towards sociology of culture since the mid-1990s. His principal research interests today are cultural, political, and religious change in late modernity, especially the rise of a new political culture revolving around cultural rather than class issues, the spread and social significance of post-Christian spiritualities of life (“New Age”), and cyberculture and virtual-community formation. For more details: www.eur.nl/fsw/staff/homepages/houtman/
