I have a background in nursing and I worked in different healthcare sector (predominantly long-term healthcare) as a nurse. My main nursing experience was in long-term mental healthcare where I worked for seven years in an organization providing community care. I finished the master Health Sciences at the University of Twente in 2008 and I started to work at the Institute of Health Policy and Management in the end of 2008 as a junior researcher / PhD candidate. I am a member of the The Netherlands Graduate Research School of Science, Technology and Modern Culture (WTMC).
My research interests are in the relation between standardization and flexibility. Rather than treating standardization and flexibility as each others opposites and as static things, I seek to study what binds them and how they relate and reinforce each other in reaching certain aims. My object of research is healthcare improvement. I study healthcare improvement practices in long-term care (predominantly elderly care), such as the development process of guidelines, the implementation of care plans to ensure client centered care etc. In doing so I try to show how standards can be rigid but can also be flexible and support in flexibility, improvisation and experimentation.
