ESL researcher Dr René Repasi, who also acts as scientific coordinator of the European Research Centre for Economic and Financial Governance (EURO-CEFG), was invited on Monday, 24 April, by the German Parliament (Deutscher Bundestag) in Berlin to give a testimony on Brexit.
Dr Repasi was asked to speak about the rights British citizens will lose in the EU27 and Union citizens will lose in the United Kingdom once a withdrawal of the UK from the EU (‘Brexit’) materialises and to reflect on ways how these rights can be protected afterwards. Repasi was speaking about the limits of Article 50 TEU, which serves as a legal base for the withdrawal agreement, and about the scope of the protection of vested rights under International law and the law of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). He focussed thereby on the right of residence and permanent residence of British citizens in the EU27, the recognition of professional qualifications lawfully acquired pre-Brexit and the danger of Ltd. companies, registered in the UK but economically active in Germany, to lose their limited liability once a withdrawal takes effect.
