Erasmus School of Law researcher dr. Elena Kantorowicz-Reznichenko has been awarded a € 30.000,- grant from the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Strategic Alliance, Centre for Safety and Security (LDE CSS). Dr. Kantorowicz-Reznichenko and her team have received the grant for their work on the risk perception of terrorism.
The Centre for Safety and Security promotes different inter-university projects of the universities of Rotterdam, Leiden and Delft. Dr. Kantorowicz-Reznichenko and her partners applied for a LDE CSS grant to fund their research on communication and terrorism. ‘Our project concerns assessing the risk perception of terrorism and how to design a communication strategy, based on this assessment. For example, people might feel that these risks are much higher than they actually are. And based on this feeling, the public can pressure the government to adopt certain policies that are maybe exaggerated or unnecessarily expensive.’
‘I am extremely happy with this outcome. This funding enables me and my team, which further consists of dr. Jaroslaw Kantorowicz from Leiden University and dr. Gerdien de Vries from TU Delft, to use empirical methods to further investigate this issue. First, we will build a theoretical framework, and then we are going to test it on a large scale samples. The research will be conducted in both the Netherlands and in the UK. This will be a first step towards a bigger ambition of mine, namely a research project that concerns communication strategy on terrorism on a European level. I think it’s an important and very exciting project, so I’m really looking forward to continue our work.’
