Smartphones make it possible to assess processes in daily life, by sending micro-questionnaires or tracking activity (e.g., GPS). Such data collection methods are called Experience Sampling Methods (ESM, also Ecological momentary Assessment, EMA, or Ambulatory Assessment AA).

ESM allows to answer exciting new research questions but comes also with challenges and questions. What research questions can I answer? How do I design such a study? How do I analyze these data?

The workshop “Opening the Black Box of Daily Life with Experience Sampling Methods” is intended to help researchers making the first step to applying this method in their own research. The workshop entails an introduction lecture “Why use ESM?”, where issues about variability in daily life, distinction between within- and between person processes, and person-specific processes are discussed. In the afternoon participants can choose between two modules. In the module “How to design your first ESM study?”, questions are addressed about sampling schemes, monitoring protocols and instruments. In the other module “How to analyze your first ESM data?” first analyzes are conducted in R (basic knowledge of R is required). The workshops allow for working on own ideas/data and participants are invited to bring their own examples.
