Clinical Cognition Lab
People in the Clinical Cognition Lab are interested in cognitive mechanisms underlying emotional disorders such as depression and anxiety.
One line of research examines how people remember and forget traumatic experiences such as childhood abuse. Another line of research looks at cognitive deficits that may explain depression and anxiety, and how training such deficits may relieve symptoms.
Who are they?
Elke Geraerts is an assistant professor at the Institute of Psychology, Erasmus University of Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Together with colleagues at the university, as well as several research assistants and master’s students, she is studying cognitive processes involved in emotional disorders.
Trauma, depression and anxiety
Most of the work that they have published includes studies examining how people remember and forget traumatic experiences such as childhood abuse. At the moment, they are setting up new studies looking at deficient cognitions involved in depression and anxiety. They are also trying to find new ways to train patients to overcome such cognitive deficits.
Another part of the lab is studying different coping styles, both in children and adults.
