Cognition and Learning
The research group cognition and learning of the psychology department, Erasmus University Rotterdam consists of five principal investigators and a number of Ph.D. and master students. We focus on research that applies recent findings in cognitive psychology to educational settings. Areas of interest include memory, forgetting, metacognition, and instruction. For example, insights from experimental studies on metacognition (thinking about your own mental processes) are used to investigate how metacognition can be used to improve reading comprehension in children. After careful testing of basic learning mechanisms in the laboratory, the robustness and generality of these mechanisms is assessed in the classroom.
