Kai Wang is PhD candidate in Public Administration at the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Kai Wang has a background in urban planning. He has a Bachelor's degree in Town and Regional Planning in China, and a Master's degree in Landscape Architecture and Planning, obtained at Wageningen University and Research Centre.

Kai Wang has a strong interest in urban planning theories, social involvement and public participation in planning process, Chinese and Dutch urbanisation. Moreover, he also has a strong interest in comparison of planning theories and practices between China and Europe, which is throughout his education in planning fields.  

Kai Wang joined the Institute of Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS), at the Faculty of Social Sciences in October 2014, where he currently works as a PhD candidate. His PhD research focuses on social empowerment of civil society in community (neighbourhood) planning from a social quality perspective. The Social Quality Theory, as an emerging and promising theory in social science, and its relevance and application in planning field will be critically discussed. The research will also reflect on current situation of empowerment of civil society actors in local planning institutions and practices. The case study is planned to be conducted in China, the Netherlands and Italy.

Before entering IHS, Kai Wang worked as a research assistant at the International Association on Social Quality (in Amsterdam). During this period, he joined the Europe-China cooperative research Project on Public Participation in Environmental Governance on behalf of the association. The environmental governance experience of The Hague and Jiaxing City was compared in this study.
