His research is part of the research programme "Cognitive aspects of Psychopathology". The mission of this programme is to conduct research on (neuro)cognitive factors that contribute to the etiology and maintenance of psychopathology in humans.

Marien Lievaart's current research focuses on the clinical neuroscience of (trait) anger and aggression. Using correlational and experimental designs he investigates whether processes related to automatic hostile interpretations, ruminative attention, and effortful control are important contributors to individual differences in angry reactivity. Moreover, he investigated the psychometric properties of the Dutch version of the STAXI-2.
