Admission requirements Master History of Society

Admission criteria

You can apply if:

  1. You have a university Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent in history
  2. You have a university Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent social sciences, humanities, or a Bachelor’s degree from a university college. It is imperative that you can demonstrate that you have undertaken coursework in history (e.g. through electives or a minor).
  3. Sufficient English language skills. We recommend that you take a TOEFL or IELTS test to prove your English language proficiency:
    • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), minimum requirements: 100 in the internet-based test (sub scores with a minimum of 23 or higher). 
    • IELTS academic (International English Language Testing System), minimum requirement: overall score of 7.0. (sub scores with a minimum of 6.5 or higher).
    • A Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE - grade B or A) or a Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE grade C, B or A) will also be accepted.

(For native speakers and graduates of recognised academic programmes taught entirely in English, the obligation to take a language test may be dropped after considering their academic performance.)

Because the total number of students is limited, the following criteria will be taken into account in the admission procedure:

  • academic writing skills,
  • analytical skills,
  • average grade Bachelor,
  • relevant extra-curricular activities,
  • and above all: motivation.

Admission requirements pre-master programme History of Society

For promising candidates who do not meet all entry requirements, we run a one-year pre-master programme. This preparatory programme caters in particular for students who have little experience with history and research methods.

Admission requirements pre-master History of Society

Related programmes

Students who have completed the following programmes at a university of applied sciences can apply for the pre-Master History of Society:

  • Secondary teacher History
  • Secondary teacher Citizenship

For other programmes at this level, the Examination Bord will assess if admission is possible.

Criteria

Because the amount of places in the programme is limited, the following criteria will be taken into account during the admission procedure:

  • academic writing skills
  • analytical abilities
  • average grade Bachelor
  • relevant extracurricular activities
  • motivation

The selection will be based upon the motivation letter, a list of grades of the Bachelor, a curriculum vitae and a (previously written) paper.

Language

For the pre-Master History of Society, students need to demonstrate English language skills through a language assessment:

  • TOEFL: 100 (sub scores min 23) or higher
  • IELTS: 7.0 (sub scores min 6.5)
  • CAE: grade B or A
  • CPE: grade C, B or A
