The knowledge of key business and management skills is vital to advance conceptual and practical knowledge of the business world. Basic knowledge makes you better at work, better at home, and generally more prone to discover opportunities for personal, company and even social growth. In a knowledge-based and innovation-driven world, knowledge of business functional areas is an essential capability to gain a sustainable competitive advantage. More than that, all employees in any job and at any level of the organization can make use of this knowledge to enhance work performance and make an impact in the process.

This course aims to provide foundational knowledge on key functional areas in business and management. The course is made of five modules, each of them two weeks long. The five components will cover basic functional areas and will be taught by leading scholars in each of these disciplines: (i) Organizational Behavior/Human Resource Management; (ii) Strategic Management; (iii) Finance; (iv) Supply Chain/Operations Management; and (v) Marketing Management. The combined structure of these five components will provide foundational knowledge on key subjects of business in different functional areas of management. The minor answers this basic but foundational question:  How can students acquire, in a short period of time, basic knowledge of key insights in management?

Special aspects

RSM students cannot apply to this minor. This minor is explicitly open to students from other EUR faculties, and Delft & Leiden universities. Students need to be able to talk and write in English. General research skills are assumed.

Overview content per week

Although not completely clear yet, this is likely the structure of the course.

The general structure of the course is that there will be 5 parts of two weeks that cover one functional area in business. In those 2 weeks students are assumed to read materials and view online video’s that discuss the materials on their own. During the 2 weeks students will also apply this knowledge to a case in a group assignment. The 2 weeks end with a small exam and an assignment deadline. Each of the 5 modules looks as follows:

Teaching methods

This is a fully online course. Lectures are asynchronous and online in the form of video’s. Synchronous meetings concerns Q&A sessions concerning the content of the course (not mandatory) and coaching sessions concerning the groups assignments for the course (mandatory).

Teaching materials

Students will receive a reading list and a list of online video lectures concerning the readings. Students will also receive cases – on which the assignments will be based. All materials are provided online.


Method of examination

Students will do 5 small exams concerning the 5 functional areas and 5 group assignments concerning the 5 functional areas. The exams will be open questions exams (open book). The assignments will ask the students to apply the materials to a case in groups and provide a report of the application.

Composition of final grade

Each exam counts for 12% of the final grade (total 60%). Each assignment counts for 8% of the final grade (total 40%).

Feedback method

Students get feedback on their exams in terms of an answer model with correct questions. Students will get (written or oral) feedback on their assignments with their grades. Students will also receive feedback on their assignment progress in the coaching sessions
