EdTech (educational technology) is the combination of IT tools and education practices aimed at facilitating and enhancing learning. The exponential growth in technology has opened new ways of teaching and learning,  from robots making it easier to stay engaged to AI tools to assist teachers with grading, EdTech is in the  classroom and it is here to stay. 

ErasmusX is a driving force behind educational innovation for the EUR. In co-creation with students we want to crack to the code of future-proofing education with EdTech.

This interdisciplinairy minor introduces students to the world of EdTech and offers students an opportunity to prototype and design their own EdTech solutions for EUR. The aim is to design and develop an IT tool with classroom teaching to create a more engaging, inclusive and personalized learning experience. Small teams  of students are challenged to find existing problems at EUR and prototype and design a solution for these problems. The best solution will be developped in co-creation with extrenal stakeholders. 

While working on the prototypes is a team effort, students will be working on their 21st century skills proficiency as well. All students are individually asked to determine the skills they want to develop while participating in the minor, making the minor a personalized learning experience for all participants.

During the minor several EdTech professionals will host activities and share their hands on experience with the students. The 21st century skills development is encouraged through frequent meet-ups and lectures. Students receive guidance, coaching and a growth hack training from EUR academics.

Learning objectives

Students will become acquainted with: 

  • Multi-/transdisciplinary mindset
  • The world behind educational technologies (EdTech)
  • Personalized and contextualized learning 

After completing this minor, students:

  • Can empathize with the users they are targeting
  • Can define the problem they are working on and share multiple points of view with others
  • Ideate and explore the solutions 
  • Generate prototypes, proof of concepts, designs for minimal viable products 
  • Test the solution, evaluate it with the target audience  

In teams students will be working on developing 21st century skills.

  • Students will be given the freedom to select the focus of their particular skill development to better shape their own learning experience and develop skills required for their own goals. 

Special aspects

For this minor:

  • Prior experience in coding, designing and/ or prototyping is not a requirement. 
  • Creativity and critical thinking are valued. 
  • Written and spoken proficiency in English is required.
  • Mandatory attendance offline and or online. 
  • Students are encouraged to bring in their own ideas.
  • An open mindset and entrepreneurial spirit are important.

This minor is open to all EUR students who wish to take a broadening minor. You can submit or change your preferences until 31 May. Leiden University students can register via uSIS. TU Delft students must request prior permission from their Examination Board and can register via the procedure for external students.

Overview content per week

Week 1: introduction in EDTech and 21st century skills and team building 

Week 2 & 3 : discover an educational problem on campus 

  • Research into the problem 
  • Test assumptions, collect data
  • Determine users

Week 4 & 5 : define the problem

  • From the outcomes of week 2 determine the problem the team will work on 
  • Determine stakeholders 

Week 6 & 7: Ideate and prototype

  • Generate radical ideas and explore solutions
  • Pick one solution and start rapid prototyping cycle

Week 8 & 9: Testing and Evaluation

  • Qualitative test and evaluation, data collection and feedback

Week 10: Present all prototypes and closing event

Teaching methods

Project based learning, experiential learning, design thinking.

    Teaching materials 

    Students agency is an important part of the learning experience. Students decide what problem they want to solve and what relevant knowledge and information is needed to solve the issue. Open educational resources, open online platforms and other type of materials relevant for the project are approved.

    Information and knowledge with regard to skills development will be made available thorugh articles, literature and video’s.


    Method of examination

    Considering the hands on nature of this minor there is no written exam. The following components together result to a grade for the entire team:

    • Blog / vlog/ podcast: students are encouraged to document their learning journey and share their learning with the EUR community. They can choose to write about their experiences and / or create a video blog or record a podcast.
    • Assignments and deliverables: every stage of the process ends with an assignment and / or a deliverable.
    • Prototype and design: does the solution fit the problem….
    • Skills development: a reflection is required to complete the minor. All students are requested to engage in feedback loops and reflect on their own process.

    Composition of final grade

    Blog / vlog/ podcast: 30% of the grade

    Assignments and deliverables: 40% of the grade

    Prototype and design: 30%
