Minor Inclusive and Emergent Leadership: Empowering Yourself And Others To Reduce Social Inequalities

The teaching methods are based on Service Learning and experience based learning. In addition, the content focusses on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (e.g. 4; quality education, 10; reduced inequalities), inclusive leadership, interpersonal skills and mentoring.
The course will teach students about the complexities in our communities and wil help them understand not everyone is presented with the same chances in life. People’s chances strongly depend on social, cultural economic and psychologial capital. Your outlook on life is often dependant on these factors, which in turn influences your positioning in the world. This minor aims to shed light on these different chances.
Four important elements are part of this minor:
- Theory: During the lectures important theories will be explained regarding the teaching methods, the SDGs and leadership.
- Preparation: Training will be provided about, for example, mentoring, creating safe spaces, opening up to different world views. This will also help learn more about yourself. In this phase the personal learning goals will also be defined.
- Experience: The actual interaction with your mentee. A mentor-mentee experience based on mutual respect and relationships.
- Reflection: This will start early on in the minor and focusses on understanding your mentee, analysing and evaluating your own position and creating mutual understandings.
After this minor the student is able to:
- Explain the importance of inclusive leadership with regards to the SDGs.
- Understand differences between students and mentees in how they view the world
- Demonstrate the development a growth mindset.
- Implement their (newly acquired) interpersonal skills (empathy, collaborating, communicating, and leadership).
- Present an enhanced feeling of cohesion and solidarity.
Additionally, personal learning goals will be created at the start of the minor.
Students should and be flexible in their availability as this partly depends on their mentee (e.g. evenings).
The student should be able to understand at least basic Dutch (A2) as mentees will mostly be Dutch high school students, and communication is an important part of the metor-mentee realtionship. It is also important to understand the Dutch context well, for this reason we do not accept exchange students without sufficient knowledge of the Dutch language or culture. All RSM minors have mandatory attendance.

A reading list will be made available which will focus on the theory-part of the course.
Method of examination
Examination is based on both a written test and written assignments.

- Participation in mentor-training (pass/fail) – no resit
- Midterm;Multiple Choice and open questions (30%) – resit possible
- Reflection portfolio (50%) – resit possible
- Intervision preparation (20%) – no resit
- Final presentation (pass/fail) – no resit
- Multiple feedback sessions with faculty
- Intervision session between students, supported by faculty
- Written / oral feedback on final report
- Oral feedback after presentations
