Research Erasmus School of Law assessed as “very good” by External Review Panel

The assessment of research of Erasmus School of Law (ESL) has been deemed satisfactory by all parties involved. In December 2016, an international external review panel, chaired by Professor Laurence Gormley (RuG), visited ESL to assess its research 2009-2015.

In their final report, the panel evaluated ESL on all three relevant criteria (research quality, relevance to society and viability) as “very good”. In a number of areas results in research were even identified as “excellent”.

ESL was praised as a dynamic faculty, full of energy and enthusiasm, and as an academy with a committed scientific and support staff, as well as committed programme directors. The panel also positively noted the buoyant and impressive level of research activity. It was pleased to learn that ESL acknowledges the differences between international, national and interdisciplinary research and the value of combining these elements. Furthermore, there was praise for the extensive reform of the PhD training and the support programme in Erasmus Graduate School of Law.

In a first reaction, ESL Dean prof. Suzan Stoter and Vice Dean prof. Fabian Amtenbrink expressed their appreciation of this outcome. ‘Thanks to our committed academic staff, who succeeded in conducting high-quality research in times of high workload, and thanks to the excellent performance of all attendees of the site visit last December, we received an assessment report we can all be proud of. The efforts of the preparatory group of programme directors, the EGSL director, Research Office and the Board of Research also deserve our commendation."
