Dr. J. (Jeroen) van der Waal (ESSB)

Jeroen van der Waal is a political and urban sociologist, primarily engaged in research on the impact of globalisation on inequality, value orientations and voting behaviour in the west. He defended his PhD thesis on the impact of globalisation on inequality in Dutch cities cum laude in 2010, and received  the Dutch Sociological Association’s bi-annual dissertation award for the best PhD thesis in Sociology (2009-2010). His current research focuses on the impact of globalisation on the education gap in nationalism in the advanced economies, based on a research plan that has been awarded a Veni grant by NWO in 2013. Besides his research, Jeroen van der Waal serves as director of education in the Department of Sociology.
