Content

Have you always wondered how computers work? Do you want to perform advanced computational analysis for your thesis? Then, this minor is for you. In the Advanced Computer Science minor, students learn basics of computer hardware, advanced concepts of computer software, as well as the use of computers for data storage and data processing. The students are also introduced to some of the problem-solving methods and techniques used in Computer Science to support business decision making within the context of business intelligence. In addition to a general overview of computers, the students learn advanced programming techniques in Java, and to develop and query relational databases.

Learning objectives:

After the minor, the students are able to identify the main components of modern computers and the working principles upon which they are based. They are also able to discuss the relation of various components to one another. Further, students are able to apply techniques from computer science to process large amounts of structured data and to create advanced computer models for their research by using a modern programming language. Students can also apply the learnt techniques to support business decision making.

Specific characteristics:

Successful participation in this minor requires a significant ability to deal with abstract concepts, much like in mathematics. Furthermore, experience with a personal computer (e.g., Windows or Linux) is essential.  In addition to the previous experience with a personal computer (which is possibly common), students need to have previously followed an introductory course on programming.

    Content:

    Computer science has developed various methods for storing, retrieving, and processing large amounts of data. In the Databases module, students learn about one of these methods, namely the relational model, the related modeling approaches, and the SQL query language for data retrieval.

Module 4: Topics in Business Intelligence

    Content:

    Many business decisions are based on information from a variety of information systems. In the module Topics in Business Intelligence, students learn about the developments regarding how data stored in information systems can be transformed into useful information that managers can use for supporting their decisions.

Examination

Method of examination:

Module 1. Written exam and assignments.
Module 2. Assignments and mandatory participation in the tutorials. Module 3. Written exam, written report, and mandatory participation in the tutorials.
Module 4. Written report.

Composition of final grade:


Students need to pass each module with a grade of at least 5.5 (there is no compensation) in order to complete the minor. Only students that have opted for a 15 ECTS minor need to pass module 4.

Module 1. After grading, students can review their exams in an evaluation session; the lecturer will present sample solutions to the questions.
