Student Econometrics and Operations Research
Although it was an almost non-existent field just 50 years ago, econometrics and operations research has permeated every aspect of our society on a fundamental level. As the fastest growing academic field on the planet, econometrics has become paramount in all sorts of things: from predicting movements in financial assets and forecasting demand for new products, to deciding the most optimal allocation of organs for transplants in hospitals. This revolutionary aspect and fast-paced development in the field of econometrics makes it an extremely exciting study. In fact, it was a major reason for me why I decided to study it.
As well as being revolutionary, econometrics affords excellent career prospects, the best out of all non-doctoral programmes in the Netherlands. Many of the best careers as well as best paying careers, such as an actuary, and quantitative financial analyst are associated with econometrics.
Be warned though, that if your interests lay primarily in business and economics, this may not be the programme for you. The Econometrics and Operations Research programme at Erasmus School of Economics Rotterdam is almost entirely mathematics, with just a few supplementary economics, programming and business courses. If you possess a great aptitude for mathematics, however, I strongly recommend this programme to you.
