Types of Explanation and Interdisciplinary Collaboration in Institutionalist Theorizing

Institutionalist theories constitute an important strand of contemporary social scientific research. However, until now the deeper relations among the multiplicity of existing accounts have largely remained unexplored. Consequently, current research often suffers from quite eclectic borrowing among existing accounts and from missing methodological standards. This present state of research gives rise to a variety of interesting methodological and philosophical questions in relation to institutionalist theorizing. By analyzing the explanatory characteristics of selected institutionalist theories in different social scientific disciplines I want to point to fruitful lines of inter- theoretical and interdisciplinary collaboration in order to support, ultimately, a better-founded and more problem-oriented selection among the different accounts of institutionalist research.
