Just take those stairs, you'll live longer!

Ever taken the stairs all the way to the top of the Tinbergen Building? The stair-running event, organised by Erasmus Sport together with insurance company Zilveren Kruis, is not only fun, it's a good way to draw attention to the fact that you probably have a far too close relationship with the elevator.

Of course, you don't need an event to climb those stairs: here are three other reasons why you should!

1. Burn those calories

Just do the maths: maybe you need to be on the fifth floor of the Polak building, say, twice a week. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator burns about 50 calories – that’s an ENTIRE BITTERBAL! Plus, frequently climbing stairs also helps strengthen some of those muscle groups in your lower body.

2.  Live longer

Every bit of exercise helps you live longer: people who exercise moderately (walking fast, for example) for about 7 to 10 hours a week lower their chances of premature death by 40%! With more vigorous exercise, like running, you can even lower that number of hours. So running the stairs = win win!

3. You're in good company

Don’t take our word for it: even Rector Magnificus Huib Pols marched up the notorious stairs of the Polak building in February during another stairwalking event by the the Sustainability Hub. And he’s a physician. ‘As a part of the executive board, we encourage healthy living’, he said to Erasmus Magazine. ‘You work here, you study here, but you also need to do some exercise. Take the stairs, as I have done. It’s for the best, it’s for your health’
