PhD defence of Gerrit Hugo van Heuvelen on 2 December 2016

On Friday 2 December 2016 Gerrit Hugo van Heuvelen will defend his PhD thesis entitled 'Export Prices, Trade Dynamics and Economic Development'. Supervisor is Professor Jean-Marie Viaene (Erasmus School of Economics) and co-supervisor is Dr. Annette Pelkmans - Balaoing. Other members of the committee are Professor Richard Paap (Erasmus School of Economics), Professor Hylke Vandenbussche (KU Leuven) en Dr. Maarten Bosker (Erasmus School of Economics.

 

Time and location

The PhD defence will take place in the Senate Hall of Erasmus University Rotterdam and will start at 13.30 hrs.

About 'Export Prices, Trade Dynamics and Economic Development'

This thesis focuses on international trade and the economic development of the Philippines. The Philippines is a country that is often said to be stuck in the Middel-Income Trap. Indicating that the Philippines has been unable to move up to the highest income group. The author constructed a new Philippine firm level panel dataset with the help of the Philippine Statistical Authority. Using the new dataset the thesis makes novel contributions to the international trade literature on topics such as product quality, product switching and export pricing. In the process questions related to the economic development of the Philippines are answered.

About Gerrit Hugo van Heuvelen

Gerrit Hugo van Heuvelen (1985) obtained a Master’s degree in Economics and in Econometrics from Erasmus University Rotterdam. In September 2011 he started with his Ph.D. at the Tinbergen Institute. His research interest include International Economics, Applied Econometrics, Development Economics and Macroeconomics. Combining Economic theory with Econometric analysis is what characterizes his research.

Gerrit conducted his doctoral research at the Tinbergen Institute. The Tinbergen Institute is a joint research institute of Erasmus School of Economics, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Amsterdam and Faculty of Economics and Business Administration of VU University Amsterdam.
