Profile

Flor Avelino has been working as a researcher and lecturer in sustainability transitions and transformative social innovation since 2005. With a background in political science, she specialises in power theories in relation to social change and innovation. She has a particular interest in understanding how people and networks are (dis)empowered to contribute to change and how power relations are being challenged and/or reproduced through translocal social movements striving for more just and sustainable futures.

Her organizational home has been the Dutch Research Institute for Transitions (DRIFT) since 2005, where she conducted her PhD-thesis on Power in Transition with Cum Laude and where she has been working ever since. As scientific coordinator of the TRANSIT project on social innovation she was one of the initiators of the Transformative Social Innovation Manifesto. Currently she is involved in international research and innovation projects on sustainable and just cities (UrbanA) and social innovation in energy transitions (SONNET). Teaching is one of her main passions and as previous academic director of the Transition Academy, she strives to co-create learning environments to challenge people to think and act for radical, transformative change to tackle the societal challenges of our times.

In 2020 she took up a new challenge as associate professor at the Department of Public Administration and Sociology at the Erasmus School of Social & Behavioural Sciences and as theme-lead Sustainable and Just Cities for the [Vital Cities and Citizens][] initiative of the Erasmus University of Rotterdam. She combines this with her continued work at DRIFT.

She is excited about the potential synergies between these different departments, projects and initiatives, with a continued focus on understanding issues of power and how people can be empowered to transform their environments into more sustainable and just places.
